Tuesday 4 June 2013. Norwich D1- Cromer & Sherringham

Sunny again today and Mick was awoken by a Robin warbling away at 4.30am and yes, it was light outside. Lyn slept through it. What a lot she misses.

After breakfast we headed off to Cromer, a smallish seaside holiday resort town. What a lovely place it was although there was not a lot of good sand on the beach but it was better than most. They also had the 2 life savers flags stuck into the beach. Rather ambitious as there we couldn't see anyone in the sea but there was a rather brisk cool wind which would have kept most Aussies out of the water as well.

We took a walk down the pier to see if there was a penny arcade like the Brighton pier where in 2010 we spent a few pounds enjoying ourselves but there wasn't. As we reached the end of the pier there was a door which Mick went through and was surprised to find this very powerful looking boat with all the bits and pieces you would expect to find on a sea going vessel. It had Cromer Lifeboat written across the back and it is the sort of boat anyone being lost at sea would be very pleased to spot coming their way. It is launched down a steel runway straight into the water and looks like it could be underway in minutes should the need arise.

The antennae and radar were folded down so that it could clear the roof as it shot out of it's shed. They would then be raised to the vertical position.

The walls of the building housing the boat had honour boards listing the rescues that the Cromer crews had performed. There was also a large plasma screen on which was being displayed a video of the boat in action with details of it's specifications. Very impressive indeed.

We then walked back into the town to look at the massive Cromer Parish Church. What  a magnificent building it was right in the middle of town. It seemed a bit over the top for such a small place and was undergoing quite a bit restorative work. Mick went inside to take some pictures and made a donation to the cause whilst Lyn hit the shops.

Cromer Lifeboat. That's what they are called here. In Australia call them rescue boats

After Cromer we headed off to see Betty Broom,  who was Mick's sisters secondary school teacher in Nottingham in the early 50's. Betty is living in a retirement village in Sheringham a few miles up the coast from Cromer. There we had a pleasant afternoon before heading back home to Norwich.

Hit one of these and it would make a mess of your car. That's 50 miles per hour. About 80k's.
