The above picture shows the weather today although it did improve and we had little rain on our trip from Nottingham to Gloucester.
Gloucester has a beautiful cathedral in the northern part of the city and it’s foundations were an abbey dedicated to St Peter in 681. King Edward II is buried there and it was used to film the corridor scenes in 3 of the Harry Potter movies.
After leaving the hotel we hit the M1 motorway very quickly and were soon purring along at a cracking pace.
Mick said it wouldn’t last believing there would be some narrow windy bits but there weren’t and we moved seamlessly from the M1 to the M42 and then the M5 followed by the A40 and after 108 miles (174 kms), we were there.
We did stop at a motorway café for a Costa coffee and to stretch our legs and ignored several motorway exit signs including one for Royal Worcester pottery.
Royal Worcester is a British brand established in 1751 and known for its history, provenance and classically English collections of porcelain.
As it turned out we should have had a look because we got to the hotel so early that we had a 3 hour wait to check in.
We didn’t waste the time however and whilst Mick toured the Gloucester Quays, Lyn found a very large Brand Depot to shop in.
During Mick’s saunter around the Quays he found a boat berthed at the Quays which took people on tours down the River Severne towards the Severne Estuary so he booked 2 tickets and went to prise Lyn from her shopping.
Lyn seemed to enjoy the trip particularly the commentary by the Captain.
After the boat trip we went to check in and organize the car. It turned out that the Travelodge Hotel we are staying at doesn't have any parking (brilliant) so we had to park in the shopping centre car park opposite the hotel on a busy road. Signs in the car park clearly stated that cars belonging to non shoppers would be clamped. The receptionist at the hotel told us not to worry about that.
Anyway it turned out that we could get parking from 6pm to 9am each day in the multi-story car park next door for £2.
When we had all that sorted out we went for a very nice meal at the new Nando’s restaurant at the Quays which is undergoing quite a bit of development.
The tour boat which was used heavily during the second world war.
