Saturday 1 June 2013. Long Melford & Bury St Edmonds

A lovely sunny morning as the first Blackbird woke Mick at 4.30am.  Sunset is currently 2108 and sunrise 0442.

Mick hadn't booked anything so we decided to explore the village of Long Melford followed by the town of Bury St Edmunds. As we left Glemsford, the sun disappeared and it became quite cold.

We first spent sometime visiting all the shops in Long Melford. There are a lot of shops in the UK which sell wonderful examples of beautifully crafted porcelain and all manner of antique items and Long Melford was no exception.

After Long Melford we drove to Bury St Edmunds a town steeped in history going back to Roman times. King Edmund was killed by the Danes there and there is a statue of him in the shopping centre with arrows sticking out all over him. Gruesome. Mick didn't take a picture so as not to offend the more sensitive among you.

As a footnote, when we picked the rental car up it showed that we had 189 miles worth of fuel left in the tank. After traveling about 190 miles it now shows we have 318 miles worth of fuel in the tank. Extrapolating a final mileage figure from that would indicate that we can travel 508 miles (818klms) on a tankful. Not too bad. The trip computer shows we are currently achieving 53.2 miles per gallon which by my calculation is 5.3 litres per 100klms.

Merry-go-round in Bury St Edmunds

  1. When I drove rentals in Germany last year the Ford Fiesta used about 5.6l/100km and the Toyota Auris (not in Australia) used about the same amount of juice. Quite amazing really but the cost of petrol last year was about $AU 2.00 / liter (1.60Euro)hence it was appreciated. The diesel version is slightly more thrifty.
