Today we said farewell to my
cousin Davina and her husband Geoff who have been marvelous hosts looking after
us really well and taking us here there and everywhere. We said goodbye to
Davina and called in at the Timber Yard to say our goodbyes to Geoff before
hitting the road towards Liverpool.
We arrived a little early and
after booking in and having a cuppa, we headed off to look around St Helens in the
blistering heat (thank goodness the car is air conditioned because the 3 storey
Ramada Encore hotel isn’t).
We found the headquarters of
Pilkington Glass which has glass blowing demonstrations so we called in to
watch for £6 each for a ticket. The entry also included fascinating videos of
the history of glass manufacture and a tour through recently excavated kilns
and tunnels through which exhaust gasses were passed to return and supplement
the heat to the gas burners.
The glass blower was amazing,
creating a coloured handkerchief bowl whilst we watched.
This evening we had a meal at
the local pub, and yes, Lyn had BBQ ribs (yet again). She loves those things
and Mick had his sausages.
