Monday 19 August 2013. Inverness. Urquhart Castle, MG gathering

Before we left this morning on today's activities, we filled up with diesel at the local Tesco as we had a 5p (8c) per litre discount docket. We had traveled 603 miles (971klm) since last filling up and squeezed in 48.48 litres. This means that we achieved 4.99L/100klm or 56.47mpg.

On our last day in Inverness, we decided to visit Urquhart Castle which overlooks Loch Ness and is just out of  Drumnadochit on the A82.

When we arrived we found a car park full sign out the front so we drove up and down the road  looking for somewhere to park. Unfortunately the road has the Loch on one side and an almost vertical cliff face on the other so we decided to go into the car park and  join the queue. As it happened we drove in as a car was pulling out so Lyn, who doesn't like waiting for anything was happy.

When we went to buy our tickets there were two queues, one huge queue for people picking up pre-booked  tickets and an empty line for walk ups. So we went straight in much to the chagrin of the pre-bookers.

We went into the gift shop/restaurant area which was the only way of getting to the castle and watched a 10 minute movie on the history of the castle. When the movie ended, the screen rolled up and curtains behind the screen opened to reveal a great view of the castle.

After a wander around, Mick climbed to the top of the tower to take some photos and then came down and we watched a bag piper playing tunes at various spots around the ruins.

Then it was back to the shop so Lyn could pick up a few items before we vacated our parking spot and went back to the village of Drumnadrochit. Here we found a huge gathering of MG's which had come for an afternoon drive.

The drive was part of the MG Car Club’s European Event of the Year event at Aviemore, south of Inverness which was one of the largest gatherings of MG cars the world has ever seen. Around  369 cars from 23 countries and spanning nearly a century of MG motoring had gathered there for a five-day driving extravaganza.

Cars were there from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Eire, Sweden, Switzerland, USA, Wales and Scotland so there was a good turnout.

There were many left hand drive cars and several V8's which MG began offering in the MGB GT V8 in 1973. It used an aluminium block 3528 cc Rover V8 engine, first fitted to the Rover P5B. The result was a vehicle with a great power to weight ratio.

Eventually Lyn managed to drag Mick away from the cars and we returned home, calling in to Morrisons on the way to get some fresh salads for tea.

 That pretty well describes us!

Cock Pheasant - seen better days. In fact it is dead! Mick found it - roadkill.
